PALM SUNDAY 2019: Looking to Traditions Past, Present

PALM SUNDAY AFTERSERVICE BRUNCH/ MEAL MENU: I started cooking early since I have a lot of pasta to cook. And Kiwi the cat, like Baba, likes to watch me cook. Aside from church and on vacation and sometimes for family holiday meals, I rarely cook. We are a carryout family.
But so far the Palm Sunday menu is as follows and I note the cultural tradition being honored by the dish.
FETTUCINI W SPICY TOMATO SAUCE: This is fairly simple. Cook the fettucini noodles. Then I added tomato sauce and Pasta Sauce with seasoning. Then I added sea salt, black pepper and olive oil then mixed it all together. (an Italian Palm Sunday tradition)
Side: ITALIAN MEATBALLS - We have some vegetarians at church so I serve the pasta and meatballs separately. The meaatballs will be cooked/basted with tomato sauce and olive oil, then seasoned with some salt and pepper same as the fettucini.

PAN/PITA BREAD and ITALIAN BREAD PIECES with five bean dip, fig jam (from Mediterranean traditions)
======
LENTIL GREEN PEA SALAD: I mixed 2 cans of lentil beans with 1 can of green peas. I cooked them together for @ 5-8 minutes then added black pepper, himalayan sea salt and a pinch of turmeric for seasoning, mixed then cooked a few more minutes. This dish can be served hot or cold. I'm not sure how I'll serve it yet. But if you are serving it cold, it is still a good idea to cook the beans and peas together then add seasoning and let it cool, so that flavors can be infused in the salad. You can also add an additional creme sauce to this like sour cream, dill sauce, hollandaise cause, aouli if you wish. I think it tastes good in a simple version. To me, it resembles black eyed peas. (from Greek, British traditions)

FIGS: FIG JAM and FIG NEWTONS (from Biblical, Mediterranean, British traditions)
The custom of eating figs on Palm Sunday gave rise to the name Fig Sunday, or Fig Pudding Day, in England, when children would buy figs and either eat them or bring them home to their mothers to make fig pudding. The name may have come from Jesus' cursing of the barren fig tree on the day after his entry into Jerusalem, as told in the 11th chapter of the Gospel of Mark.

CINNAMON BUNS (for Hot Buns)- (a British tradition) A 14th century record tells how a monk of St. Albans distributed spiced cakes to the needy on Good Friday, inaugurating an annual tradition, though he carefully guarded his recipe. There was also a period where hot buns were called cross buns as British Catholics put crosses into the hot buns as an act of defiance of the outlawing of Catholicism

MACARONI N CHEESE (American southern tradition)
I am cooking 2 boxes of elbow macaroni then mixing it with half cup of milk, 1 can of processed white cheese sauce, 1 bag of shredded colby cheese. Stir together and mix. Then add 1/3rd cup of black pepper, 1/3rd cup of sea salt, 1/4 cup of himalayan sea salt. Stir and mix. Then add small pieces of cut cheese. I am using mozzarella cheese. But you can add any sort of cheese you want. Pour into a baking dish. Bake for @ 30-45 minutes. How long you cook is determined by what your goal is--- liquidy smooth texture or a more crispy texture. I know of folks who enjoy it all. The cheese should fully melt. You can you whatever sorts of cheeses you want to use. I like cheddar, colby, white cheddar, mozzarella, swiss, muenster, fontina, feta, mexican and italian cheeses.

SMOOTHERED POTATOES (from Irish, American southern (Cajun) traditions): Layer sliced/diced potatoes, onions, sausage/meat, cheese, spices
I am layering diced potatoes, onion, sliced potatoes, beef stew meat, onions, tomatoes, cheese, potatoes. I am seasoning eah layer with @ 1/8th cup of black pepper and sea salt and small chunks of colby cheese. I suggest using olive oil on the pan bottom and also on the top layer. I am also using garlic salt on top of the bottom layer of potatoes and the top layer of potatoes for flavor.
